We have watched Luke Grimes play Ella's on-screen partner in the "Choosin' Texas" video more times than we would admit, so a new interview where he explains how he landed the part was always going to get our attention. Speaking to Woman's World this week, the "Yellowstone" star laid out the backstory, and it is a good one.
They Met at a Wedding
Grimes and Ella were introduced through a mutual friend at a wedding, and it was there that Ella first mentioned she wanted to try acting someday. The timing stuck with him. "This is kind of right before the big pop off for her, right before she got strapped to the rocket and took off," he said, "so I think maybe that's why she reached out when it was time to do the video, and it was a no-brainer."
That phrase, "no-brainer," is the part we keep coming back to. Grimes is a working actor with a hit show and a music career of his own, and he treated a country music video like an easy yes. The reason is simple on his end: he is a fan.
'I Just Love That Song So Much'
"I just love that song so much," Grimes told the outlet, before admitting he had no idea what the song would become. "I had no idea that it was going to become the biggest song of all time. But I'm so happy for her. She's great. She's a real artist." He repeated the compliment a few different ways, which tells us he meant it: "All of the success that she's having is because of the fact that she is a real artist. She puts so much of her heart and soul into her work, and I'm just a huge fan of hers."
He is not wrong about the scale of it. "Choosin' Texas" is still sitting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after a record-breaking run, a stretch we have been tracking all autumn (most recently when it notched its 24th week on top). In the video, Grimes plays the guy choosing Texas before Ella hops into Miranda Lambert's van and heads back to Tennessee, a role his Western resume made easy to buy.
Could Ella End Up on 'Marshals'?
The part we are quietly hoping on: Grimes has his own show, "Marshals," and this friendship has us wondering whether Ella's acting ambition could finally get its shot there. Nothing is announced, and we are not going to pretend otherwise, but if the door is open, we would watch. For now she has plenty to keep her busy, including a packed October run you can scan on our tour page.
