ABOUT THE SONG
The song that broke the ceiling. 'choosin' texas' became the first female country single to simultaneously top the Hot 100, Country Airplay, and Hot Country Songs charts since Taylor Swift in 2012 — a feat country radio purists insisted wasn't possible for a traditional-leaning song in 2026.
The genius of the record is how unflashy it is. Ashley Gorley and Jessie Jo Dillon — two of Nashville's most reliable hit-writers — built a song around the simplest possible premise: she's from Alabama, she's leaving Alabama, and she's not coming back. The instrumentation is patient (acoustic guitar, brushed drums for the first verse, slow string crescendo across the second chorus) and the vocal is mixed unusually dry. There's no big production moment because the song doesn't need one.
Seven weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 is the headline number, but the streaming behavior tells the real story: 'choosin' texas' built its audience over months, not in a single launch week. Country fans found it first, then crossover, then everyone. By April 2026 it was the unofficial soundtrack of the Dandelion Tour's opening montage, and the line about Birmingham was its own moment at every show.
