Ella Langley's 'Choosin' Texas' Hits 13 Weeks at No. 1

Every Monday we check the new Hot 100 half-expecting the run to end, and every Monday Ella refuses. On the chart dated July 18, "Choosin' Texas" holds at No. 1 for a thirteenth week — and this time the milestone comes with a second record stacked on top of it: Ella Langley now has three songs sitting in the Hot 100's top four at the same time.

The company she just joined

Per Billboard's Gary Trust, only five songs by women (with no male-billed acts) have ever led the Hot 100 for 13 or more weeks: Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" (22 weeks), Mariah's "We Belong Together" and Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" (14 each), and now "Choosin' Texas" alongside Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine" at 13. That makes Ella's single the first non-holiday song to join that list since "We Belong Together" — 21 years ago — and the only one from an artist known primarily for country music.

Do the math on what's next. One more week on top and she ties Whitney and Mariah at 14, something Rolling Stone Canada points out would put her level with two of the most famous chart runs ever. The next chart lands Monday. We know where we'll be.

Three songs in the top four — at once

Here's the stat we keep re-reading. This week "Choosin' Texas" is No. 1, "Be Her" holds at No. 3, and "I Can't Love You Anymore" with Morgan Wallen jumps 6-4 for its first week in the top five. Billboard's full list of acts that have ever placed three songs in the Hot 100's top four simultaneously: the Beatles, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen, 21 Savage, Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande — and now Ella, the first female artist ever to do it with three country songs.

All three come off Dandelion, which has spent all 13 of its chart weeks at No. 1 on Top Country Albums. And the pipeline isn't done: "Loving Life Again," the fourth radio single, just debuted on Country Airplay this same week.

The numbers under the hood

For the tracking week of July 3-9, "Choosin' Texas" pulled 25.1 million U.S. streams, 50.8 million in radio airplay audience, and 7,000 downloads sold, per Billboard. It's also No. 1 on Streaming Songs for a fourteenth week (tied for the fifth-longest run in that chart's history), No. 1 on Digital Song Sales for a twelfth (one of just 10 titles ever to lead that long), No. 1 on Hot Country Songs for a thirty-first, and No. 1 on Songs of the Summer for a sixth.

When we covered the 11-week mark back in June, the story was longevity. Two weeks later the story is company: Whitney, Mariah, the Beatles. Meanwhile "Be Her" is quietly running up records of its own at country radio.
