'Choosin' Texas' Is Now the Longest-Running Non-Holiday No. 1 by a Woman

We spent last Monday saying Ella Langley was one week from standing alone. Monday came. "Choosin' Texas" logged a 15th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the tie is over — Langley now passes Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (2005) and Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" (1992-93) for the most weeks at No. 1 by a woman with no co-billed act, holiday songs excluded, per Billboard.

A record that had stood since Whitney's run in the early '90s, matched but never beaten in 33 years, belongs to a country song written in Nashville about a girl choosing a state over a person. Whiskey Riff framed it the way most of us are still processing it: this is the longest-running No. 1 by a female artist this century, full stop.

The week 15 numbers, and the one that matters

Billboard reports 25.2 million official U.S. streams, 51.9 million in radio airplay audience and 7,000 downloads for the tracking week.

Compare that to week 14: 24 million streams, 51 million in airplay, 7,000 downloads. Streams went up. Airplay went up. In week fifteen.

That is the part that keeps surprising us. Songs this deep into a run normally sag on all three fronts at once — the streaming crowd has moved on, radio has moved to the next single, and the chart position becomes a slow fade. "Choosin' Texas" is doing the opposite, and it is doing it while "Loving Life Again" is being worked to radio as the follow-up single. Two Ella Langley songs competing for the same airwaves and the older one is still growing.

What next Monday actually needs

Here is the math nobody has laid out yet. The all-time non-holiday Hot 100 record is 16 weeks, shared by three songs: "One Sweet Day" (Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, 1995-96), "Despacito" (Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, 2017) and "Last Night" (Morgan Wallen, 2023).

• One more week on top and "Choosin' Texas" ties all three.
• Two more weeks and it stands alone as the longest-running No. 1 in the chart's 67-year history that isn't a Christmas song.
• Among songs by women of any kind, only Mariah's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" (22 weeks) has led longer, and that one gets a running start every December.

The competition is closer than the streak suggests. This week country held the entire top four for only the second time ever, per InMusic — Taylor Swift's "I Knew It, I Knew You" at No. 2 for a fifth week, Stella Lefty's "Boston" climbing 6-3 to a career peak, and Langley and Morgan Wallen's "I Can't Love You Anymore" rebounding to No. 4. Any of those could have a big streaming week. So no, we are not calling week 16 done.

The Dandelion Tour has three dates left in this stretch, and the odds are decent that the song is still sitting at No. 1 for all of them:

• Friday, July 31 — CMAC, Canandaigua, NY
• Saturday, August 1 — Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA
