Ella Langley at the Greek Theatre: LA Recap & What We Know

Ella Langley played two nights at LA's Greek Theatre on October 13-14. Night one sold out, had an acoustic set with both openers and got a mixed review from the LA Times. A young fan named Mallory also got to sing 'Butterfly Season' with her. Here's what we know.

Ella Langley played two nights at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Tuesday, October 13 and Wednesday, October 14, with Laci Kaye Booth and Kameron Marlowe opening. Night one was sold out. The Los Angeles Times reviewed it, and the review was mixed: the critic loved the acoustic section in the middle of the set and was much less impressed by the rest. Neither night has a setlist on setlist.fm yet. We're not going to guess the order.

Night one: the acoustic set

About halfway through the Tuesday show, Langley pulled a stool to the front of the stage and told the crowd she wanted to "be kind of normal for a second, if that's all right witcha," LA Times pop critic Mikael Wood wrote. She played "Somethin' Simple" from Dandelion ("While I'm living the dream, all I'm dreaming about is slowing down just a little"). Then she brought out both openers for stripped-down duets: Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" with Laci Kaye Booth and "Strangers" with Kameron Marlowe.

Wood called that stretch "by far the best part of the night." He also said Marlowe "gladly disregarded that unspoken rule about not showing up the headliner who hired you."

The rest of the review

He didn't like the rest as much. Wood wrote that the bigger, fully produced parts of the show "demanded a level of star power that Langley simply doesn't possess (or anyway isn't interested in deploying)." He also said her cool, detached delivery, which works on record, came across as flat onstage. He did like how she looked ("very Linda Ronstadt meets Stevie Nicks"). He also noticed how much merch there was: more merch stands than he'd ever seen at the Greek, and "every one of them was jammed."

That's one critic on one night, and he still described a packed, sold-out room. It's a real review, though, and you should know what it says.

A young fan's "Butterfly Season" moment

The clip from LA that went viral wasn't from the review. At one of the Greek shows, Langley invited a young fan named Mallory onstage to help her sing "Butterfly Season," Entertainment Now reported from a TikTok video. Mallory wore pink cowboy boots and an Ella T-shirt, and she sang the "I'm finding my wings" line back to her. "Y'all give it up for Mallory tonight!" Langley told the crowd. Then: "That's the most precious angel I've ever seen." The report doesn't say which of the two nights it was.

What about night two and the setlists?

We don't have much on Wednesday, October 14. setlist.fm has pages for both nights, and all of them are still empty. The October 13 page logs a 9:00 p.m. start. We haven't found any press coverage of the second show. If you were there, send us what she played.

For the set she was running on that leg, look at Red Rocks on October 7 a week earlier and the Saint Paul finale at the end of the month. The "Dreams" and "Strangers" duets from LA show up regularly on the fall setlists we've logged.

Two days later: REDWEST

From LA she went to Salt Lake City, where she was the billed headliner for Friday, October 16 at REDWEST at the Utah State Fairpark. So far, the only song logged for her set on setlist.fm is "Dandelion," and we haven't found any coverage of the show. We'll fill it in if that changes. The REDWEST show page has the details.
